Gilpin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 4,757. The county seat is Central City.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 389 km˛ (150 mi˛). 388 km˛ (150 mi˛) of it is land and 1 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,757 people, 2,043 households, and 1,264 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km˛ (32/mi˛). There are 2,929 housing units at an average density of 8/km˛ (20/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.37% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 1.53% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 4.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,043 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.10% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.81.


In the county the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 37.40% from 25 to 44, 30.00% from 45 to 64, and 5.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 112.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $51,942, and the median income for a family is $61,859. Males have a median income of $38,560 versus $30,820 for females. The per capita income for the county is $26,148. 4.00% of the population and 1.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.40% of those under the age of 18 and 6.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
