Plot summary

The Arrival of Ginyu

Continuing from where the Namek Saga left off, Vegeta is the only one that senses something has changed in Goku, and he wonders if Goku has become the Legendary Super Saiyan, as the well-rounded Jeice and the incredibly fast Burter continue their losing battle to Goku. It doesn't take long till Goku goes full force and easily KO's Burter, to the shock of Jeice. Goku tells the last standing member they've all been deceiving themselves and that their fighting was pointless. However, the merciful Goku spares Jeice. Jeice is unhesitant and runs off to tell Captain Ginyu. Vegeta does what Goku could not, and kills the unconscious Burter and Recoome. Goku becomes upset with Vegeta saying that they should be shown mercy like Vegeta was, but Vegeta says that the Saiyan race is a race of warriors and that they will do anything to win. Vegeta also tells Goku he was a fool for letting Jeice go, saying it'll only lead to trouble. Meanwhile, Ginyu is marveling at the gathered Dragonballs, saying how powerful his master will become, as Frieza travels to find Guru, to get the password to summon the Namekian Dragon when he found that he couldn't summon it earlier. Captain Ginyu is a fictional character in the manga Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and the anime Dragon Ball Z. Although he is not directly a part of Freezas army, Captain Ginyu was the leader of the elite mercenary Ginyu Force and the most powerful warrior employed by Freeza...

He is interrupted by Jeice, who arrives to tell him of their defeat. Ginyu is at first angry over the deaths of his men, but is annoyed at Jeice for leaving. He forgives Jeice, and orders Frieza's men to bury the Dragonballs, so no one can find them. Ginyu and Jeice quickly fly off, to seek revenge on Goku.

Meanwhile, Vegeta believes that Frieza is now immortal, but Kuririn points out that Freeza hasn't made his wish yet. Kuririn explains if Freeza had summoned the Namekian Dragon the sky would have turned black. However, since the sky's color hasn't changed and Frieza would have already had an opportunity, Goku realizes that the Namekian Dragonballs require a password to summon the Dragon. Goku and Vegeta then sense for Frieza and they detect him heading towards Guru's house. Knowing that this is an opportunity to recover the Dragonballs at Frieza's ship, Goku dispatches Kuririn and Gohan to retrieve the Dragon Radar and then find the Dragonballs. They leave once Ginyu and Jeice arrive. Vegeta and Goku get ready fight them, but the dirty Vegeta leaves the scene, leaving Goku to fend for himself.

Goku vs. Captain Ginyu

Vegeta, flying to Frieza's ship, claiming that he'll kill Gohan and Kuririn once they find the dragonballs, and wish for immortality. Before Goku can stop him, Ginyu makes his attack, and they begin the fight. While Ginyu appears to have a slight advantage, it is revealed that they are both holding back the bulk of their powers. Goku is almost in trouble when outrunning Ginyu, Jeice fires a powerful energy attack straight at him. Goku dodges, but he is locked in a half-nelson. Jeices urges Ginyu to break his back, as Goku struggles to free himself. Ginyu, however, lets him go, and tells Jeice that if he ever interrupts the battle again, he'll kill him. Ginyu then tells Goku he wants him to go full power. Goku then performs his Kaioken technique. Ginyu quickly realizes that Goku is much stronger than he is, besting a power level of 120,000 to 180,000, where Goku was just using bursts of 60,000 to 90,000 power level attacks before. So he uses his trump card...he tricks Goku and eventually switches bodies with Goku using a specialized "Change" technique after weakening his own body by punching himself through the chest.

Goku(Ginyu) vs. Gohan and Krillin

Vegeta reaches Frieza's ship first and exterminates the remainder of Frieza's henchmen. Krillin and Gohan arrive shortly afterwards with the Dragon Radar to find the Dragonballs so they can summon the Namekian Dragon, and Vegeta hides so they can find the balls for him. They find the Dragon Balls and confirm that the Namekian Dragon Balls do need a password. Jeice and Ginyu (in Goku's body) then arrive on the scene. Not knowing about the change Krillin and Gohan come to greet him. Gohan senses that something isn't right about this "Goku" and comes to the conclusion that he is in fact an impostor. They begin to fight.

Soon Goku (in Ginyu's body) arrives and convinces Krillin and Gohan that they can defeat Captain Ginyu because he isn't used to Goku's body yet, and can only reach a power level of 23,000 maximum, although Goku in Ginyu's body has experienced an exponential power level decrease as well, degrading to 10,000. In the duking it out, they almost succeed but Jeice jumps in to help. Vegeta comes out of hiding to take on Jeice. He lies about being a Super Saiyan which scares Jeice and easily kills him.

Vegeta vs. Goku(Ginyu)

After being beaten to a pulp by Vegeta, Ginyu decides to switch bodies again. Only this time with Vegeta. When he is about to make the switch Goku jumps into the beam's range at the last second and gets his body back. Ginyu tries again, the beam was close to connecting with Vegeta, but Goku throws a frog into the beams path. Before anyone knows it Ginyu is trapped inside of the body of a frog.

Unfortunately, Goku, now back in his body was hurt badly. He is put in the rejuvenation chamber by Vegeta on Frieza's ship. The gang also takes the Dragonballs. While this is happening however, Frieza has gone to see the elder Namek using his new scouter. There he is confronted by Nail, and told that the Dragonballs can only last as long as the Great Elder (Saichoro) is alive.

The Freeza Saga was divided into three sub-sagas in the U.S., the Namek, Ginyu, and Frieza Sagas. This is because the old Saban/Pioneer edited dub ended after the Namek Saga and FUNimation started dubbing the show themselves at the beginning of Goku's fight with Burter and Jeice, which started the Ginyu Saga in the U.S. The Season Two boxset includes the story of the Ginyu Saga in full, up through the defeat of Captain Ginyu.

Many characters in the Ginyu Saga were re-dubbed because this is where the Saban/Pioneer dub ended and when FUNimation started using in-house voice actors. The Season Two boxset version of "Ginyu Assault" also restores the episode to its original format by removing the extra footage that was added to the episode when was first aired and released. This extra footage was meant to help bridge the gap between the old Saban/Pioneer edit of the Namek Saga and the Ginyu Saga, covering for footage that was never dubbed in the older edit.
