Giraut de Bornelh (c. 1140- c. 1200), also known as Giraut de Borneil, was one of the most notorious troubadours, and is credited with the formalisation, if not the invention of the "light" style, or trobar leu. About 90 of his poems and four of his melodies (http://www.cam.org/~malcova/troubadours/giraut_de_bornelh) are left. Giraut de Bornelh va assolir molt èxit amb el seu treball literari i era considerat el millor dels trobadors, anomenat el maestre dels trobadors, criteri que no va compartir Dante en la seva obra De vulgari eloquentia, que el qualifica de "poeta de la rectitud".
Giraut de Bornelh fou un professional de la poesia i, segons sembla, fou professor d’art de trobar.
Segons Martí de Riquer, "Giraut de Bornelh, poeta exclusivamente amoroso, tiene una constante tendencia a la disertación moralizadora y al largo y cerebral razonamiento", encara que es capaç de conjugar lirisme dins de les sentències i les veritats generalitzadores.
