Eminent Kannada film-maker Girish Kasaravalli started his career with "Ghatashraddha" in 1977. It won the "Swarna Kamal" (Golden Lotus) for 'Best Feature Film', from the Government of India, that year. He followed it up with a series of artistic masterpieces including "Tabarana Kathe" (1987) starring Charu Hasan, "Thayi Saheba" (1997) produced by and starring actress Jayamala, and "Dweepa" (produced by and starring the late actress Soundarya) in 2002. All these films also won the "Swarna Kamal" in their respective years of release, making Kasaravalli the only Indian film maker after Satyajit Ray (who won the award six times) to have as many films so honored.
