Biography

In 1990, 30 eager 10-year old girls auditioned on stage in Houston,Texas, each of them hoping to be one of the lucky six chosen to form a new all girl group. After a long day of rehearsals and callbacks Támar Davis (12), Beyoncé Knowles (10), Kelly Rowland (11), and dancers/rappers LaTavia Roberson (10), Nikki Taylor (13), and her sister Nina Taylor (11), earned positions in the group that would be manage by Andretta Tillman 1. Immediately, Girl's Tyme began practicing six hours a day on a variety of R&B, Rap,and Pop songs, hoping to create their own unique sound. They choreographed dance routines to accompany the songs and began appearing in venues all over the Houston area, Black expo, Miss Black Houston Metroplex Pageant, and Peoples Workshop Sammy Davis Jr. Awards. The young performers garnered attention and were profiled in The Houston Chronicle, where a music critic predicted they would someday be stars. The expectations were high as Girl's Tyme prepared for their first national exposure on the television show Star Search. They hoped that a first place win would guarantee their future success in show business. After all, Star Search had helped launch the careers of many entertainers. Unfortunately, Girl's Tyme did not walk away with a first-place trophy. What was hoped to have been their big break instead turned out to be the first of many failings and small break-ups for the young performers. Three of the six girls remained, Beyonce, Kelly, and LaTavia. A fourth member LeToya Luckett was added. The group also added a new manager, Matthew Knowles. Now all they needed was a new name to celebrate their renewed commitment. In the following months the group tried out a few names: Cliché, Something Fresh, Destiny and The Dolls. Incidentally, a similar group that preceded called The Dollz, established by a woman named Janice Cummings, had also held auditions that garnered the interest of the same girls who tried out for the group organized by Andretta Tillman and Matthew Knowles.
