NORCO, California (CNN) -- A 6-year-old girl who police say was covered with feces and chained to a bed in a filthy southern California home for five years was reported Wednesday in serious but stable condition at a hospital where she was being treated for malnourishment.
The emaciated girl was in a filthy bedroom, wearing only a diaper and tethered to a brass bed by a thick two-foot chain that "looks like a dog leash," Sgt. Perri Feinstein-Portales said.
According to authorities, the girl's mother, Cindi Sue Topper, said her daughter had been chained to the bed off and on since she was 1.
