The Gironde is a navigable estuary, but often referred to as a river, in southwest France. It is formed from the joining of the Dordogne and the Garonne above Bordeaux. The Gironde is approximately 70 km (45 miles) long and between 3-11 km (2 to 7 miles) wide.
In Bordeaux, the Gironde regional govern-ment announced that oyster-gathering would be banned in the large nearby Bassin D'Arcachon bay because of pollution.
The worst hit areas were the coastlines of the Landes, between the Spanish border and north of the Girondeestuary above Bordeaux.
The Gironde authorities said collection of oysters and other shellfish from the bay was banned as of late Saturday and their sale like-wise banned as of Sunday because of oil pollution found on the edge of the inlet.
