On 24 May 1996, 25 attackers were killed and 1 person wounded in a military operation against rebels to the north of the capital of Gitega province.
As a result of a rebel attack on the town centre of Makamba, Makamba province, on 3 April 1996, 16 inhabitants were allegedly killed, together with one of the attackers.
On 12 April, in another sector of the province, between 40 and 50 people were reported killed in a rebel attack at Kivoga.
