Legend would have it that upon its release the British music press roundly criticised the album as being too polished. A common accusation today is to refer to the album as being viewed in 1978 as too "heavy metal" - in the most derogatory sense of the phrase. However, the reviewer in 'Melody Maker' music weekly who used that term (and infact said "swash-buckled-heavy-metal"), signed off with "The best Clash LP since the last Clash LP, both, I personally feel, transcending anything ever recorded". That latter sentence is uniformally overlooked by today's soundbite critics of the album.

Strong sales upon release also seem to confirm rumours of any bad reception to be somewhat unfounded. The album was a major hit in the UK, peaking at #2. In the US 'Give Em Enough Rope' was The Clash's first American release, peaking at a moderate #128.

Initial recording sessions for the album took place in May 1978, at the Marquee Studios in London. However these were scrapped due to a combination of band illness and unhappiness with the sound. Sessions re-started in June, spread across three London studios (Basing Street, CBS and Utopia), with a short break in between to play the 'On Parole' UK tour. The album was completed and ready for final mixing by September.

Being impressed with the production of the Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks album, the band originally wanted Chris Thomas and Bill Price as producers. However they were already booked, so the job went to Sandy Pearlman. Accounts differ as to whether Pearlman was forced upon the band by CBS, or whether he was chosen by The Clash themselves. At Pearlman's request the band flew to the US for final mixing and overdub sessions. Initially these took place at San Francisco's Automatt Studio (at 829 Folsom Street, now gone), with extra sessions at New York's Record Plant, and Electric Lady studios. During the San Francisco sessions, a postcard entitled "End Of The Trail" was discovered in a shop near the studio, featuring the image of a dead cowboy being eaten by vultures. Given some gaudy Warholian colouration, this image was adapted for use as the front cover of the album. The designer was Gene Greif.

Initial copies of the UK release of the album came with a free poster, showing The Clash on one side, and a map of terrorist hotspots on the other.

"Guns On The Roof", the opening track of the album's B-side, was inspired by an air-gun related incident that resulted in the Metropolitan Police's armed anti-terrorist squad raiding The Clash's Camden Market base.
