Glen is a town located in Montgomery County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,222. The town was named after Jacob Glen.

The Town of Glen is centrally located in the county, southwest of the City of Amsterdam.

History

Glen was first settled in the 18th Century. The town was formed in 1823 from the Town of Charleston.

Geography

The Mohawk River forms the north town line, and the Schoharie Creek forms the east town line. The [[[New York State Thruway]] crosses the town on the south shore of the Mohawk River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.8 km² (39.3 mi²). 100.2 km² (38.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,222 people, 781 households, and 567 families residing in the town. The population density is 22.2/km² (57.4/mi²). There are 863 housing units at an average density of 8.6/km² (22.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.59% White, 1.98% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 781 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 109.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,307, and the median income for a family is $44,674. Males have a median income of $32,473 versus $22,642 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,583. 6.0% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

• Auriesville -- A hamlet on the Mohawk River in the northeast part of the town, on Route 5S.
• Fultonville -- The Village of Fultonville is in the north part of the town next to the Mohawk River.
• Glen -- The hamlet of Glen is in the center of the town on Route 30A. The community was originally called Vorheesville and Five Corners.
• Square Barn Corners -- A location between Fultonville and Glen village on Route 30A.
• Stone Ridge -- A hamlet on the west town line, on the Mohawk River.
