Tin was first discovered at Emmaville in 1872 and Glen Innes became the centre of a mining bonanza during the late 1800’s. Other nearby villages are: Deepwater, Torrington, Ben Lomond, Wellingrove and Glencoe.


The centre of the town retains some of its federation buildings and the owners have painted these buildings in the colours pertaining to this era.


Among the many attractions of this area are the extensive Land of the Beardies History Museum, the town parks, fishing, fossicking areas, Gibraltar Range National Park, several waterfalls, the Standing Stones, which are large monoliths and World Heritage listed Washpool National Park.


The Glen Innes Magpies are the pride of the Town, and their single win in the 2006 Group 19 premiership was heavily celebrated. However great controversy arose when Gary Jones allegedly stole and ate the entire bag of team jerseys. The Magpies, led by the ultimate halfback Brendan Dwyer is looking to enter the National League and turn Meade Park into a 50,000 seat stadium. But this is subject to council funding.


There are at least three churches, including the Cameron Memorial United Church.


Annual events include: Minerama, a gem and mineral festival; the Australian Celtic Festival, Land of the Beardies Festival, Pastoral and Agricultural Show and also horse racing, the prestigous Glen Innes Cup rivaling the likes of the Melbourne Cup.
