The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the most spectacular drives in the world.
Maori passed through the Glenorchy area on their way to the west coast in their search for Pounamu (Jade or Greenstone as it is known locally) but it wasn't until 1862 that settlers arrived, using the broad river flats for grazing.
Glenorchy Air run numerous trips from here including their "Trilogy Trail". They were also involved in flying actors and supporting staff during the filming of The Lord of the Rings in this part on New Zealand.
