Glenside is a small suburb located in the City of Burnside in Adelaide around 2 km south-east from the Adelaide city centre. Home to 2,985 people in a total land area of 1.40 km². History

The suburb was not founded as a village, like many other suburbs in the area such as Magill, Burnside, Beaumont and Glen Osmond. The area was mainly farmland and was established around the 1840's and known as "Knoxville" until the early 1900's. While some buildings (mainly on the Glenside Hospital campus) date back to the time when it was a mainly rural area in the 1840's, the majority of modern (and still standing) development in Glenside occured in the mid 20th century. population is about 9 million ...


Much of the evidence of it being the primary slaughterhouse for South Australia (at one point supplying roughly half the state's beef and lamb) is now gone. Reserves and Parks

There is only one noticeable park in the Glenside area, which is located on the corner of Conyngham and Cator Streets. The park is named Symonds & Symonds Reserve, after a well-reknown glassmaker who lived and worked in the area in the early 1900's. It is located next to a Retirement Home and a Childcare center. The suburb is very green with narrow streets with large overhanging trees. Large gum trees line L'Estrange and Conyngham Streets.


Attractions

Burnside Village

Despite the name, the Burnside Village Shopping Center is actually located in Glenside, on the corner or Greenhill and Portrush Roads. It is a large shopping center and serves much of the City of Burnside areas but also attracts shoppers from other areas due to its beautiful surrounds and variety of shops which specialise in everything from jewellers to record stores to clothing stores.


Glenside Hospital

The suburb is home to the mental health campus of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Known as 'Glenside Hospital', it is the primary mental health facility in the state, and occupies approximately one-third of the area of the suburb. Others
