Encyclopedia > Globosat

Globosat is a multichannel, subscription-based cable and satellite TV service in Brazil, created in 1991, after the creation of cable and satellite TV services. It also distributes one channel in Portugal. Cable television or Community Antenna Television (CATV) (and often shortened to cable) is a system of providing television, FM radio programming and other services to consumers via radio waves transmitted directly to people’s televisions through fixed coaxial cables as opposed to the over-the-air method used in traditional... Satellite television is television delivered by way of orbiting communications satellites located 37,000 km (22,300 miles) above the earths surface. ...


In 1993, Globosat split its content generation and distribution businesses. Cable TV sales and distribution was assigned to Net Brasil, which was also responsible for installing cable networks in selected cities. Content production and programming remained with Globosat, renamed to Globosat Programadora.


Today, Globosat Programadora produces the following channels:

  • Multishow : entertainment and music
  • SporTV and SporTV 2 : formerly called "Top Sports", sports
  • Shoptime : home shopping
  • GloboNews : news
  • GNT : documentaries
  • Universal Channel : formerly called "USA", movies and series, mostly distributes content from Universal Studios
  • Telecine : movies. Telecine is actually five channels: (Telecine Premium - new releases and blockbusters, Telecine Emotion - drama, ; Telecine Action - action and soft porn, Telecine Cult - cult and independent movies, Telecine Pipoca - new releases and blockbusters, dubbed in Portuguese)
  • Canal Brasil : Brazilian movies
