In Romance languages such as Italian and French, "gn" is pronounced as a palatal nasal [ɲ]. The palatal nasal is a type of consonant, used in some spoken languages. ...


In English, the digraph is simply pronounced /n/ in monosyllabic words (i.e. benign and sign). When it appears between two syllables, the /g/ is pronounced within the first syllable, while the /n/ is pronounced in the second syllable (i.e. signal).
