Goa University is considered the centre for higher education in Goa, a former Portuguese colony and now India's smallest state, which has only a single university for its population of 1.4 million people.
Goa University is located on the outskirts of Panaji or Panjim, and is spread over nearly 173 hectares on the Taleigao Plateau, overlooking the scenic Zuari River, adjoining the Arabian Sea.
As of September 2006, the Governor of Goa S.C. Jamir is the chancellor of the university, with Prof P.S. Zacharias as vice-chancellor and M.M. Sangodkar as registrar.
