Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,824 km˛ (1,476 mi˛). 2,854 km˛ (1,102 mi˛) of it is land and 970 km˛ (375 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 25.37% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,370 people, 7,425 households, and 4,581 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 10,839 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.24% White, 1.76% Black or African American, 2.20% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,425 households out of which 24.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.10% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.30% are non-families. 34.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
