A very rare and hard to find demo version, with only a few minor — yet still noticeable — differences setting it apart from its Fallen counterpart, is available over the internet and peer-to-peer file sharing programs. The differences are mainly in the way Lee's voice was mixed, as well as the sound of the instruments. The beat and the general sound, however, are the same, just lightly altered (the vocals are also the same as those on the Fallen version).

Story behind the song

The song is about Amy Lee's relationship with an abusive boyfriend, but it can be used to describe any type of abusive relationship. Lee said the song is about emerging from a "bad" relationship, explaining "And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in. It's cool. It's a very strong song."[1] Amy Lee Hartzler (born and best known as Amy Lynn Lee, December 13, 1981 in Riverside, California) is an American singer-songwriter and classically-trained pianist. ...

Video

The video for "Going Under" was directed by Philip Stolzl and filmed in Berlin in mid-May 2003. Lee designed her own costumes in the video when she was recovering from illness in a Los Angeles hotel, the original filming location of the video.[1] The video features the band at a gig in a place full of zombies. Normal people attending the gig transform into said zombies throughout the course of the video. Lee stated that the zombies symbolize the media trying to get a piece of them, the queries about their religion and such. There are also segments featuring Lee singing in a pool of water, apparently (as the lyrics state) "drowning in you".
