The name Golaghat ('Gola' which means shop and 'Ghat' meaning the landing point of river ferry) originated from the shops established by the 'Marwari' businessmen during mid part of 20th century AD at the bank of river Dhansiri near present Golaghat town.
Later, Golaghat was elevated to the position of a full-fledged district of Assam on 15th of August 1987.
GOLAGHAT BAPTIST CHURCH: Golaghat Baptist Church, one of the oldest and biggest Baptist Churches in Assam, which celebrated its Centenary Jubilee in 1999, came into being in December 1898.
Golaghat, one of the oldest erstwhile subdivision of the northeast Indian state of Assam, created during the pre-independence era in the year 1848, has become a full fledged district (139 years later) on 23rd October, 1987.
Golaghat at one time was famous for its frequent outbreaks of Malaria and Kala-Azar.
Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned Rhino worldwide, and the Nambor reserve forest are the two natural reserves of wild flora and fauna that are situated within the district.
