Gold halides are compounds of gold with the halogens.


Monohalides

AuCl, AuBr, AuI are all crystalline solids with a structure containing linear zig-zag chains: ..-X-Au-X-Au-X-Au-X-... The X-Au-X angle is 180o.


Trihalides

The triiodide does not exist. AuCl3 readily forms out of the elements at temperatures below 254oC. It is a volatile red solid. The volatile species is the dimer Au2Cl6.

Gold halides are compounds of gold with the halogens.
A ratio of a gold sensitizer to a sulfur or selenium sensitizer is preferably such that the ratio of the number of gold atoms to that of sulfur atoms or selenium atoms forming silver sulfide or silver selenide ranges from 1/2 to 1/200.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, silver halide grains are subjected to reduction sensitization, and further subjected to sulfur sensitization or selenium sensitization in combination with gold sensitization in the presence of a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound capable of forming a complex with silver.
