The Golden Triangle is a region of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The "triangle" is formed by the cities of Columbus, Starkville, and West Point. The term was created to encourage greater economic ties between the three cities and counties (Lowndes, Oktibbeha, and Clay). The three cities share an airport, Golden Triangle Regional Airport. Columbus has traditionally been the leading city of the Mississippi Golden Triangle, but the collapse of industry in Columbus and the rapid growth associated with Mississippi State University has led Starkville to challenge this position. The GoldenTriangle in Mathematics is an isosceles triangle such that the ratio of the hypotenuse to base is equal to the golden ratio.
The "triangle" is formed by the confluence of the Allegheny river and Monongahela river; it is "golden" because it is and long has been the city's commercial center, where the fortunes of industrial barons like Carnegie, Frick, Westinghouse, and Heinz were made.
The triangle formed by the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and the University of London - notably the constituent institutions Imperial College, UCL and the LSE.
Mississippi was part of the Mississippian culture in the early part of the second millennium AD; descendant Native American tribes include the Chickasaw and Choctaw.
Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union as one of the Confederate States of America on January 9, 1861.
Mississippi was considered to typify the Deep South during the era of Jim Crow.
