The goldenrain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), also called golden rain tree, Pride of India, varnish tree or China tree, is a flowering tree of East Asia.
The goldenrain tree is noted for its golden yellow, four-petaled flowers, which grow in terminal clusters. The shape of this tree towering with its clusters of gold at the ends of each branch tends towards a dome shape. Goldenrain trees grow bladderlike, green seed pods. Soon after its trademark flowers appear, the goldenrain tree will grow these papery seed pods. They contain black seeds. Goldenrain trees grow to 9 meters (30 feet) tall.
As some of its common names indicate, the goldenrain tree is native to Asia. However, this tree is popularly grown as an ornamental in temperate regions all across the world because of the aesthetic appeal of its flowers, leaves and seed pods.
