Plot
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Paula Tessier (Ingrid Bergman) is a beautiful and successful Parisian interior decorator and very much in love with her longtime partner, Roger (Yves Montand), who is less than faithful to her. Their relationship, however, is going nowhere. Commissioned to redecorate the Paris apartment of a wealthy American widow (Jessie Royce Landis), she meets the pensive and melancholy Philip (Anthony Perkins), the widow's 24-year old son. He is immediately attracted to her and falls hopelessly in love with the glamorous, sympathetic older woman, insisting that the age difference will be no barrier to a romance. They attend a Brahms Symphony. Once Roger realises that he has lost Paula to Phillip, he offers to mend his ways. She takes him back, and they are married; soon afterward, however, Montand goes back to his old habits.
