Goodhue County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 44,127. Its county seat is Red Wing6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,021 km˛ (780 mi˛). 1,964 km˛ (758 mi˛) of it is land and 57 km˛ (22 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.84% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,127 people, 16,983 households, and 11,905 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km˛ (58/mi˛). There are 17,879 housing units at an average density of 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.57% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 16,983 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $46,972, and the median income for a family is $55,689. Males have a median income of $36,282 versus $25,442 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,934. 5.70% of the population and 3.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.20% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
