Goodman is a town located in Holmes County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,252.


Geography

Goodman is located at 32°58'5" North, 89°54'45" West (32.968057, -89.912625)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.20% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,252 people, 280 households, and 206 families residing in the town. The population density is 589.5/km² (1,523.3/mi²). There are 303 housing units at an average density of 142.7/km² (368.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 33.23% White, 65.81% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 280 households out of which 42.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.4% are married couples living together, 32.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.58.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 39.0% from 18 to 24, 18.1% from 25 to 44, 10.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $13,929, and the median income for a family is $14,643. Males have a median income of $30,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,359. 45.6% of the population and 49.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 63.0% of those under the age of 18 and 35.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
