Gordon County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 44,104. The county's county seat is Calhoun, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 927 km² (358 mi²). 921 km² (356 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,104 people, 16,173 households, and 12,259 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 17,145 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (48/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.69% White, 3.46% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.98% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 7.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 16,173 households out of which 35.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.20% are non-families. 20.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 31.40% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $38,831, and the median income for a family is $43,184. Males have a median income of $29,761 versus $22,256 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,586. 9.90% of the population and 7.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
