The information highway is a term used, especially in the 1990s to describe the Internet.
It is often associated with the US politician and former vice president, Al Gore, who promoted funding for programmes that led to aspects of the development of the Internet, although its currency was wider than merely Gore — many policy organisations made pronouncements about the so-called information highway or the variant information superhighway.
Both terms are used less frequently now that for many people the Internet has become a less abstract and more concrete thing; the highway analogy, though useful and apt, has perhaps served its purpose.

But this highway program is quite different from the one that occupied the attention of Gore's father in the 1950s.
A two-way highway leading both to and from the home is replacing the one-way transmission channels of mass media, enabling the kind of individual "transportation" elicited by the highway metaphor.
These barons of commerce are plotting strategies for mining what Gore has called "the most important and lucrative marketplace of the 21st century," with expected annual revenues of $3.5 trillion (Gore, 1993a).
