Gorzów Wielkopolski (abbrev. Gorzów Wlkp., pronounce: ['gɔʒuvvielkɔ'pɔlski], GermanLandsberg an der Warthe) is a city in northwestern Poland, on the Warta river, with 126,000 inhabitants (1999). Since 1999, it is one of the two capitals of Lubusz Voivodship (the other is Zielona Góra), previously capital of Gorzów Voivodship (1975-1998).
Gorzów is situated away from important traffic routes within a thin populated region. There are connections to Szczecin, Wrocław and Piła. Near Gorzów are located the biggest Polish oil fields, more than 210 milion barrels worth $8 bln at the current price.
In 1975 the city become the capital of the Gorzów province and in 1979 the town boasted 100,000 residents.
Today Gorzów Wielkopolski is spread around 77sqm and has roughly 130,000 residents, a high percentage of which are young and employable people.
Following the recent administrative reform in Poland, Gorzów is the place of office for the region and one of two capital cities of the newly established Lubuskie Region.
