Because of the old link, however, five gourdes is often referred to as a "Haitian dollar". Likewise, 5 centimes becomes a "Haitian penny". Indeed, in many places, prices are given not in gourdes, but rather in "Haitian dollars", which must be multiplied by five to convert to gourdes. A gourd is a hollow, dried shell of a fruit in the Cucurbitaceae family of plants.
Gourds are also used as a tool for sipping yerba mate by means of a bombilla, in Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, where it is called "cuia" (kOOya).
Night blooming gourds are pollinated by moths, which are normally present in adequate supply unless they are drawn off by night lights in the area.
Gourd, Bottle -- Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl. (1158 words)
The bottle gourd probably originated in Africa and from there was widely distributed in pre-Columbian times, perhaps by floating on the seas.
The bottle gourd flowers are borne singly on the axils of the leaves, the males on long peduncles and the females on short peduncles.
Gourds prepared for Purple Martin houses should be painted with an exterior oil-base white paint to reflect the sun's rays and cool the insides.
