This is a list of governors of California prior to it becoming a U.S. state in 1850. From 1769 to 1822, the area was a province of the Spanish colony of New Spain. Upon Mexico's independence from Spain in 1822 until the U.S. annexation in 1848, it was a province of Mexico. It was then briefly an unorganized territory of the United States.
