Governors seek close ties between Centre, states (346 words)
In his first interaction with Governors, he said networking of rivers was a vital project to manage flood and drought conditions repeating in some parts of the country and sought their role in building a consensus on the project.
Initiating the discussions, Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob called for establishment of an Integration Council at the state-level, so that constant monitoring of communal situation and related problems could be carried out.
The Governors called for economic and developmental measures to upgrade the life of the people and for greater road, rail and air connectivity between various areas in their states.

In the executive branch, the governor plays a role analogous to that of the president, and the elected chief minister presides over a council of ministers drawn from the legislature in a manner similar to the prime minister.
Governors are appointed to office for a five-year term by the president on the advice of the prime minister, and their conduct is supposed to be above politics.
Governors not only attempt to keep opposition state governments in line, but also, while keeping the state bureaucracy in place, have exercised their power to dismiss the chief minister and his or her council of ministers.
