The devas or heavenly beings were inspired to give Krsna this name after Sri Krsna lifted the Govardhan hill for the protection of the Brajbasis or inhabitants of Vrndanvana. A famous prayer is given by Sankaracharya named bhaja Govinda which means; just worship Sri Govinda and one can easily cross this great ocean of birth and death.
