Gradisca (officially Gradisca d'Isonzo, Friulian Gardiscje, Slovenian Gradišče) is a town of 6,600 inhabitants in the region Friuli, north-eastern Italy. Friulian (friulano in Italian, furlan or affectionately marilenghe in Friulian) is a Romance language belonging to the Rhaetian family, spoken in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-east Italy. ... Friuli (Furlan: Friûl, German: Friaul) is an area of north-eastern Italy, comprising the major part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region; the historical Friuli is the land de Livence al Timâf, which means from the Livenza river in the west to the Timavo river in the east...


Although said to have been founded by the Venetians in the 15th century, the town name is a Slavic toponym, Gradišče being a Slovenian term indicating a site where buildings have been constructed.
