Ferdy Murphy Era (2006-)

Lee joined the stables of Ferdy Murphy as a freelance in 2006, after leaving Howard Johnson in acrimonious circumstances.


Ginger Mc Cain Era (2003-2006)

Lee was employed by Ginger McCain to partner horses in the Grand National (and other races). This was at the same time that Lee was the main stable jockey to Howard Johnson.


Grand National

In 2004, Lee won the Grand National on horse Amberleigh House. The horse is trained by Ginger McCain, who trained three time winner Red Rum. Lee also managed to steer Amberleigh to the third place in the 2003 race, and tenth in 2005. Lee partnered Amberliegh House for the final time in the 2006 National, only to be pulled up at the 21st fence. Howard Johnson Era (2002-2006)

Lee joined the Howard-Johnson team permenantly in 2002, after leaving the stables of Malcolm Jefferson. Lee always maintained freelance status, and rode for many other trainers, most notably Ginger Mc Cain. Lee left the stables in May 2006, due to a shake-up at the stable. Scottish National

Lee became one of only three jockeys to do the "Grand National Double" by winning the race on Grey Abbey in 2004. He came well back in the field on a little known horse in 2005, as Grey Abbey was injured, and subsequently retired.


In March, 2006, it was reported that Grey Abbey's trainer, J Howard Johnson would bring him out of retirement for the 2006 Scottish National, however this plan did not surface. One of Lee's most famous achievements was to win a quintuple, this is five races in one day. He achieved this in the Autumn Wetherby meeting of 2003. Gold Cup

Lee has never won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the biggest prize race in the jump calendar. However, he has only been entered once. This was in 2005 on Grey Abbey. It was reported that the horse was injured during the race, which is thought to be the reason for it finishing fifth, however Lee went on to win Top Jockey for the Cheltenham Festival. Subsequently, Grey Abby retired just over a week before the 2006 race. Lee went on to rise Ballycassidy, at 100-1, surprisingly finishing the race, but only in 11th place, and won no races at Cheltenham.


Previous Stables

Malcolm Jefferson This stable was successful for Lee, and secured him the lucrative position with Howard Johnson. He also made it to fifth in the jockey championship.


Bill Haigh This saw a turn in the career of Lee, he went from having severe injury problems to the top ten in the Jockey Championship.


Mary Reveley During this stint, Lee was a minor jockey, and therefore did not get many high profile rides. He also suffered a horiffic knee injury, from which it took more than seven months to recover.


Dessie McDonogh This was Lee's last position in Ireland before moving to England. He was based in County Meath.


Noel Meade After a successful stint on the Irish Pony Circuit, Lee left school at the age of 15 to join the stable.


Family

Lee comes from a very sporting family. His Grandfather Matthew Lee played for Kilmarnock FC as well as being capped for his international team, Ireland. Brother, Malcolm Lee was a flat jockey. His cousin Dean Mernagh is also a jockey in flat races. Matthew Lee is a Malaysian student born in Kuala Lumpur and has a blog which deals with almost anything under the sun! He is currently studying in Bintulu, Sarawak which is located in East Malaysia or better known as Borneo. ...
