  • In 1966 it was awarded as Contemporary (R&R) Single
  • In 1967 it was awarded as Best Contemporary (R&R) Recording
  • In 1968 it was awarded as Best Contemporary Single
  • From 1970 to 1971 it was awarded as Best Contemporary Song

Joseph Alfred Souter, known as Joe South (born February 28, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia), is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter with a distinctive guitar sound.
His biggest and most-remembered single was "Games People Play" (1969), a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, which won the "Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Song" and the prestigious "Grammy Award for Song of the Year".
He was also a prominent sideman, recording the memorable guitar part on Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools, Tommy Roe's Sheila as well as appearing on Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde.

The same song was honored as the best rock vocal performance by a duo or group.
When Colvin came up to the stage to accept her song of the year award, the microphone was hijacked by another interloper, ODB of the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, who bragged about his group.
Winners of the Grammy Awards are determined by the votes of eligible members of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
