Grand Bend is home to a large variety of restaurant's, stores and fast food restaurants. The main strip is the centre of activity in the town, where people go to shop during the day and young people go to party at night. The atmosphere of Grand Bend has given the town a reputation as being Florida north.
The Bend has much more to it than Main Street, though. It is a regional centre for artists and culture. The art gallerys located in the town demonstrate this, as well as the Huron County Playhouse, located just outside town.
The town was named for a "bend" made by the Ausable River as it came into town; the proximity of the river, however, caused concerns about flooding, and an artificial channel was made to drain the river more directly into Lake Huron. Thus, the town's namesake no longer exits.
Grand Bend's year-round population of 1,000 people swells to about 40,000 in the summer months. National Geographic says that Grand Bend has one of the 10 most beautiful sunsets in the world, which is thought to be attributable to the high levels of particulate matter that flow into the area from the Ohio Valley.
