Grand Canyon Village is a census-designated place located right on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,460. Located right in the national park, it is wholly focused on accoodating tourists visiting the canyon. Its origins trace back to the railroad built to the canyon by Santa Fe in 1901. Many of the structures in use today date from that period.

Grand Canyon Village is located at 36°3'12" North, 112°8'22" West (36.053284, -112.139551)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 34.8 km˛ (13.4 mi˛). 34.8 km˛ (13.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,460 people, 651 households, and 345 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 41.9/km˛ (108.6/mi˛). There are 791 housing units at an average density of 22.7/km˛ (58.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 73.70% White, 1.58% Black or African American, 18.84% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, 1.85% from other races, and 2.88% from two or more races. 10.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 651 households out of which 24.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.9% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.84.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 41.2% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 2.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 114.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.1 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $42,083, and the median income for a family is $53,676. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $23,565 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $19,923. 4.8% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
