Encyclopedia > Grand Slam (UEFA)

The Grand Slam in UEFA competitions is composed of victories in the three cups that existed until 1999: the Champions League (formerly the European Champions Cup), the UEFA Cup and the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup. The European Super Cup and the Intertoto Cup are not taken into account.

Since the Cup Winners' Cup was merged with the UEFA Cup in 2000, the "membership" of this group for clubs is extremely rare, and the players' listing (dominated by Italian players) will close, most probably in this decade.

Winners

Grand Slam Hopefuls

These teams have won the Cup Winners' Cup, making them the only ones eligible for the "Grand Slam". While some (like Arsenal, Manchester United and Valencia) have fair chances of completing the grand slam, most of the teams in this group are either missing both the still existing competitions or have lost most of their competitive power.

Some clubs, paradoxically, have slightly lower prospects for the Grand Slam in the immediate future because of their strength instead of their weakness. The clubs that currently fall into this category are AC Milan and Man U. Both are missing the UEFA Cup; however, both have been fixtures in the Champions League in recent years.
