The suburb is named after the home of Charles Sturt which he built on 500 acres (2 km²) allocated to him in 1842. The Grange cottage is still standing next to the school. Sturt's farm was subdivided in 1878 by a private company intending to establish a beach resort. The jetty was built in 1882. Putting together all of the Grange wines from two of the older vintages and those from 1976 until the latest release was not easy, so the notes that follow are not the results of a single vertical tasting but of several tastings that took place largely between January and March of 2003.
Penfolds, Grange Hermitage, Bin 95, SouthAustralia, 1978: Never one of the best examples of Grange, this medium to full bodied red was dominated by almost searing tannins in its youth and tended to show far more of an earthy-minty personality than of a blend between fruits and other aromas and flavors.
Penfolds, Grange, SouthAustralia, 1995: Still remarkably young, this full bodied and well balanced wine is now opening to reveal deep and complex flavors and aromas that include, among others, fl cherries, purple plums and wild berries, all with an almost jammy nature and with just the right levels of oak and still chunky tannins.
