Granite is a census-designated place located in Salt Lake County, Utah located to the east of Sandy. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,018, a significant decrease from the 1990 population of 3,300.


Geography

Granite is located at 40°34'16" North, 111°48'34" West (40.571151, -111.809535)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛). 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,018 people, 609 households, and 537 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 530.0/km˛ (1,374.0/mi˛). There are 642 housing units at an average density of 168.6/km˛ (437.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.29% White, 0.59% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.59% Asian, 0.35% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 609 households out of which 43.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.8% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 11.8% are non-families. 8.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.31 and the average family size is 3.51.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 109.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $108,343, and the median income for a family is $109,496. Males have a median income of $67,188 versus $35,588 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $40,098. 0.9% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of Granite, Utah (109 words)
Granite (Salt Lake) is a small community at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon, four miles east of Sandy City and south of Butler.
In1870 it wasd a good campsite for teamsters, quarrymen, and miners who were working in the Mormon church granite quarries and the mines in the vicinity.
The town was named Granite because of its proximity to the granite quarries that provided the blocks for the Salt Lake Temple.
