Granite Falls is a city located Yellow Medicine and Chippewa Counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,070. It is the county seat of Yellow Medicine County⁶.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,070 people, 1,344 households, and 806 families residing in the city. The population density is 343.6/km² (890.5/mi²). There are 1,472 housing units at an average density of 164.7/km² (427.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.35% White, 0.07% African American, 5.70% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,344 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 35.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,031, and the median income for a family is $45,536. Males have a median income of $32,905 versus $22,957 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,356. 9.7% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
