Granma is a 60-foot yacht, built in 1943 and designed to accommodate 12 people. It was purchased for the amount of MX$50,000, from a retired U.S. citizen on 10 October 1956 who had named it for his grandmother. Following the sale, it was filled with 82 Cuban exiles under the leadership of Fidel Castro, whose aim was to start a revolution against Fulgencio Batista. Other rebels on the boat (known as the expedicionarios del yate Granma) were Che Guevara and Raúl Castro. In the final days of November 1956, they sailed from the Mexican port of Tuxpan, Veracruz, and landed on the shores of what is now Granma Province on 2 December.
