Gransee liegt gerade weit genug von Berlin entfernt, um die letzten Spuren städtischer Umgebung hinter sich zu lassen.
Diese Kanäle und die Schleusen und Wehre in ihrem Verlauf sind zum Teil mehr als 200 Jahre alt und werden zum großen Teil nicht mehr gewerblich genutzt.
Eine Sehenswürdigkeit, die nicht weit weg von Gransee liegt, ist das Schiffshebewerk Niederfinow, das seit 1934 eine Schleusentreppe ersetzt.
