Grant County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 6,289. Its county seat is Elbow Lake6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,490 km˛ (575 mi˛). 1,415 km˛ (546 mi˛) of it is land and 75 km˛ (29 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,289 people, 2,534 households, and 1,740 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km˛ (12/mi˛). There are 3,098 housing units at an average density of 2/km˛ (6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.28% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,534 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% are married couples living together, 6.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.94.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 23.10% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 22.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,775, and the median income for a family is $42,214. Males have a median income of $28,428 versus $20,240 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,131. 8.40% of the population and 6.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.50% of those under the age of 18 and 9.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
