Grant County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 11,299. Its county seat is Petersburg6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,244 km˛ (480 mi˛). 1,236 km˛ (477 mi˛) of it is land and 8 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,299 people, 4,591 households, and 3,273 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). There are 6,105 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (13/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.33% White, 0.67% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,591 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the county, the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,916, and the median income for a family is $33,813. Males have a median income of $24,796 versus $18,354 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,696. 16.30% of the population and 12.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.00% of those under the age of 18 and 18.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
