Grant Township is a township located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 696.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 69.9 km˛ (27.0 mi˛). 69.9 km˛ (27.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 696 people, 279 households, and 195 families residing in the township. The population density is 10.0/km˛ (25.8/mi˛). There are 347 housing units at an average density of 5.0/km˛ (12.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 99.57% White, 0.00% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 279 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the township the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 110.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $27,500, and the median income for a family is $38,864. Males have a median income of $25,469 versus $16,346 for females. The per capita income for the township is $13,697. 14.9% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

All powers of the township shall be vested in the board of supervisors, except as otherwise provided by law or this charter, and the board of supervisors shall provide for the exercise thereof and for the performance of all duties and obligations imposed on the township by law.
