Before 2001, the southern terminus of M-3 was at exit 47A of Interstate 75 just southwest of downtown Detroit. Due to exchanges between the Michigan Department of Transportation and the city of Detroit, M-3 was broken into discontinuous segments. Now M-3 extends from Gratiot Avene to Randolph Street south to end at the intersection with Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit.
