The album was highly anticipated by fans; however, as with many of the band's albums, it was largely ignored by the music press. Grave Disorder was released with a world tour that saw The Damned play in the United States for the first time since the release of Phantasmagoria. The album is musically similar to David Vanian and Captain Sensible's previous Damned collaboration, Strawberries. It uses a combination of modern sampling and looping ("Absinthe"), gothic rock ("Thrill Kill"), pure punk ("Obscene" and "Amen"), deep gothic piano pieces ("Beauty Of The Beast" and "The End Of Time"), and more traditional pop songs. Songs like "W" show that The Damned had contributed much to the Britpop sound, as it harkened back directly to the sound on Strawberries. "Song.Com" offers a tongue-in-cheek comment on the Internet, rolling fast and very catchy. "Democracy?" offers a harsh political statement of disgust, reflecting the band's view that, 25 years after the birth of the punk movement, little has changed in politics. The song comments on the band's wish not to become complacent in music or politics.
