Encyclopedia > Graveley

Graveley is a small village, about four miles east of Hitchin and two miles north of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, England. It has several attractive cottages, the 18th century Grange and Gothic House, and the George and Dragon with its 18th century facade of chequered brick, as well as The Wagon and Horses. The church has some Norman work and, just across the fields, is the site of Chesfield, a former village with the ruined walls of the 14th century church still visible. There is also a primary school. According to recent statistics by the North Herts District council, Graveley has a population of 1,731.


The village has a popular monthly newsletter entitled "Graveley Matters" currently run by Alan Lines, a long term resident of Graveley.


In the Autumn of 2003 a major clean-up operation was performed on the village pond (seen below).

In 310 operations from Graveley the squadron lost 17 Mosquitos and a total of 150 Bomber Command aircraft were missing or crashed in the UK in operations flown from this station: 83 Halifaxes, 32 Lancasters and 35 Mosquitos.
Although Graveley was put on care and maintenance in September 1945, and no more RAF units were based there, this wartime airfield was kept as a reserve for the next 12 years.
Graveley was closed at the end of 1968 and was eventually reclaimed by Cotton Farm.
