Gravenhurst is a band from Bristol, England signed to Warp Records. Their latest album, Fires in Distant Buildings, was released in October 2005. The singer, guitarist and songwriter, Nick Talbot, is also one half of self-described "Victorian Clockworktronica" ensemble, Bronnt Industries Kapital. Nick Talbot also recorded some solo works under the pseudonym of Exercise One (the name presumably taken from the song by Joy Division, of whom Nick is a known admirer). Gravenhurst's music is often described as dark and highly atmospheric, veering between the noisy shoegazing sound of guitar bands such as My Bloody Valentine, and the more traditional singer-songwriter territory of Simon and Garfunkel, Bert Jansch and Nick Drake. Earlier releases were grounded in acoustic and folk styles, while Fires in Distant Buildings made moves towards psychedelic rock. Flying Saucer Attack, a cult Bristol outfit who released a series of feedback-drenched, folk-inspired albums in the early 1990s, have been cited by Talbot as a major influence. We are very pleased to announce the release of the brand new Gravenhurst album 'The Western Lands', which is out now on Warp Records and includes the singles 'Trust' and 'Hollow Men'.
Gravenhurst signed to Warp in 2004, re-released Flashlight Seasons, and quickly followed it up with Black Holes in the Sand, a mini-album of intense, sonic, folk-influenced murder ballads.
Gravenhurst have toured extensively in Europe and the USA, playing numerous festivals and supporting Broadcast and Belle & Sebastian.
Ontario Fire Service Pipes and Drums (241 words)
Formed in late 1997, the current band stands at 15 pipers and drummers with membership coming from across Ontario.
The band members, who play solely for the love of it, rehearse each Wednesday night at Scott Hall at the Ontario Fire College, in Gravenhurst, Ontario.
The band has appeared at several medal investitures and is an annual feature at the Memorial Service at the Ontario Fire College each October.
